Generator repair and maintenance

Generator repair and maintenance for Houston homes.

A standby generator is only worth having if it starts when the grid goes down. Wired Electrical & Generators is a family-owned, licensed and insured electrical company and a Generac Prestige Dealer. Our showroom and shop are at 13910 Alice Road in Tomball, and we have served Greater Houston since 2005. Houston is a service area for us rather than our home base, so we will be clear about distance when you call.

We repair and maintain Generac generators and other brands, including Kohler, whether or not we installed the unit. Many Houston homes added a generator after the long outages of recent years, and those machines need a yearly checkup like any engine. Call (713) 467-1125 to book generator service.

Houston

What Houston jobs look like.

Where our technicians come from

Our trucks leave the Tomball shop and head into Houston by way of I-45, U.S. 290 or Beltway 8. The drive is roughly 30 to 45 minutes depending on traffic, by our estimate. Houston neighborhoods on the north and northwest side are the easiest for us to reach, and farther addresses take more planning. When you book, give us the neighborhood and any gate or alley access so the visit goes smoothly. Because the trip is longer than a local call, we ask for the model and serial number up front and try to bring the likely parts.

Generators tucked into Houston lots

Houston lots range from narrow city lots in the Heights and Spring Branch to larger yards farther out. On tight lots a unit often sits close to the fence, the air conditioner condenser and the house wall, where leaves, mulch and standing water collect. Many city generators run on natural gas from the street, so a gas supply that is too small, or a regulator that has been bumped, can cause weak performance under load. We look at the clearances, the gas connection and the pad at each visit, and we tell you what to move or trim.

After Harvey, Uri and Beryl

Houston generators have been tested hard by Hurricane Harvey in 2017, Winter Storm Uri in 2021 and Hurricane Beryl in 2024. Units that ran for days need fresh oil and filters, and the battery is often the weak link. Units that were installed and never serviced can hide a stale-fuel problem or a controller warning no one noticed. We read the controller history, test the transfer switch and run the unit under load, so you find out in April what you would otherwise find out in a power cut.

Things to check before you call

If your generator will not start, look at the controller, which should read AUTO. Make sure the generator's own breaker is on and that the gas supply is open or the propane tank has fuel. Write down any fault code. Leave the transfer switch and the electrical panel closed, since those are for a technician. Call us with the code, brand and model, and we can say whether it is a repair we can plan or a visit that cannot wait.

Permits and HOA rules for changes

Routine service does not usually need a permit, but moving a generator, adding a transfer switch or changing a gas line does. In Houston that means the city's permit process or the county or city that covers your address, and some neighborhoods also have deed restrictions that govern where equipment can sit. Tell us if you plan any change and we will find out what applies.

Questions we get every week

Generator repair and maintenance questions from Houston.

Do you service generators in Houston even though your shop is in Tomball?

Yes. Houston is a service area for us. We cover the north and northwest side most easily and take calls farther in. Give us your address when you call (713) 467-1125 and we will say how we would schedule it.

My generator will not start. What can I check?

Check that the controller reads AUTO, that the generator's breaker is on, that there is fuel, and note any fault code. Leave the transfer switch and the panel closed. Call us with what you found.

How often should a standby generator be serviced?

At least once a year, and many owners choose a spring visit before hurricane season. A unit that ran for days in an outage should be checked afterward.

Do you service generators you did not install?

Yes. We work on Generac and other brands, including Kohler. If your generator is under warranty, tell us at the start, because coverage depends on who provides it.

My generator is on natural gas. Does the gas line matter for repairs?

It can. A weak or undersized gas supply can make a generator stall under load. We check the connection and the pressure as part of diagnosing a no-start or poor performance.

Can I pick up Generac parts at your shop?

Yes. Call with your model and serial number and we will confirm the part, and you can pick it up at the showroom on Alice Road in Tomball. Work that touches wiring, fuel or the transfer switch is best left to a technician.

Can you keep an eye on my Houston generator remotely?

Every Shield Protection plan includes 24/7 remote monitoring, so a fault can show up before the next outage; ask us whether your model can be connected. The plans differ in how often maintenance is done, and the top plan adds storm crisis priority. The plan page lists each level by generator size.

Should I keep restarting a generator that will not start?

No. Write down the code and stop. Cranking it over and over wears the battery and starter, and clearing the code hides what the technician needs to see.
