Hurricane Ike knocked out power across Entergy Texas's territory, which includes parts of The Woodlands. After landfall on September 13, 2008, Entergy estimated that 392,600 of its 395,000 customers lost power system-wide. The temperature at The Woodlands fell to 10 degrees during Winter Storm Uri in February 2021, and the National Weather Service says regional outages lasted several days.

What the township's rules and storm history mean for a generator.
Plan Review Committee approval comes first
Under Standard 2.2 of the township's Residential Development Standards, a permanent standby generator must be reviewed and approved in advance by the Plan Review Committee or its designee. Portable generators that meet the standards are pre-approved and need no application, permit or inspection.
Height and screening on fairway and lakefront lots
Standard 2.2, as revised July 2, 2025, requires the top of a permanent unit to sit under 6 feet above grade. A unit in the front or rear yard that can be seen from a street, a golf course or a body of water has to be screened. The Woodlands has seven championship golf courses and the 200-acre Lake Woodlands, so a rear yard here can face either one.
Easements, drainage and Spring Creek rain
The July 2025 revision lets a generator reach up to 8 feet into the rear easement and 3 feet into a side easement, as long as it does not block drainage. During Hurricane Harvey, a gauge 3 miles south-southeast of The Woodlands recorded 28.50 inches of rain over six days, and the National Weather Service reported major flooding on Spring Creek and its tributaries. We place the pad so it does not block drainage, as the standard requires.
Transfer switch, panel notice and an outside inspector
Standard 2.2 also calls for a transfer switch near the generator and a notice on the main circuit box stating that an emergency generator is installed and where it sits on the property. The unit must meet the current building code and pass inspection by a qualified third party, not the owner or the contractor.
County rules on top of committee rules
Plan Review Committee approval does not count as county approval, and work in a street right-of-way also falls under the county. Montgomery County's development permit, required for building, grading, clearing or filling in unincorporated areas, is not an electrical permit, so we check whether pad work or fill on your lot falls under it. For a Creekside Park address, we confirm what Harris County requires.

Questions we get from The Woodlands.
Does a standby generator in The Woodlands need approval?
Yes, before installation. Wired prepares the Plan Review Committee application.
Can the generator go in my backyard if it faces a golf course?
It can, with Plan Review Committee approval, but a rear-yard unit visible from a golf course has to be screened. Standard 2.2's screening rule covers front and rear yards, so a side-yard spot next to the house may not need a screen. The committee makes the final call.
Who does the third-party inspection the township requires?
A licensed architect, a registered structural engineer or an ICC-certified building inspector. It cannot be you, Wired, or an employee, officer or immediate family member of either.
How long does a generator installation take here?
Putting the unit in usually takes one day once the Plan Review Committee has approved the plan. The rest of the timeline depends on that review and any county requirements for your address.
Does The Woodlands require approval for a portable generator?
Not for a portable unit that meets the standards. The inlet that connects it to your panel may need committee approval, because the covenants cover hard-wiring equipment to the source of electricity. We install the inlet and interlock and prepare the committee paperwork when the hookup calls for it.
Does the township set when my generator runs its self-test?
It asks for daytime runs. Under the July 2025 revision of Standard 2.2, self-test cycles should run during daytime hours.
