Electrical panel upgrade

Electrical panel upgrade for The Woodlands homes.

A panel upgrade in The Woodlands usually comes from one of three places: an older house whose original panel is crowded, a large newer house that has outgrown its service, or a project such as a pool, a guest suite, an EV charger or a standby generator. Wired Electrical & Generators is a family-owned, licensed and insured electrician and Generac Prestige Dealer, based at 13910 Alice Road in Tomball, and serving Greater Houston since 2005.

Every job starts with a free estimate and a look at the panel, the meter and the loads in the house. Call (713) 467-1125 and tell us what you are planning, and we will tell you what the panel can handle before we recommend a thing.

The Woodlands

What The Woodlands jobs look like.

Older village homes

The Woodlands was built out village by village beginning in the 1970s, so some homes are now decades old. Original panels in those houses were sized for a smaller kitchen and one air conditioner, and many have been patched over the years with extra breakers and added circuits. We inspect the connections, label what we find and tell you whether the panel can stay, needs replacing or should be paired with a larger service. If we find old wiring that is not part of the job, we point it out so you can plan, and we do not push it.

Large homes with big loads

Many Woodlands houses are large, with several air conditioners, pools and spas, outdoor kitchens, wine rooms or a guest house. The loads add up fast, and the question is how the service is arranged: one big panel, a main with subpanels, or a second service. We add up the real load and lay out the options, including a subpanel for a detached building. If you also plan an EV charger or a standby generator, we plan their circuits at the same time.

Trees, service masts and underground feeds

In a heavily wooded community, how power reaches the house matters. Many neighborhoods have buried utilities, and the service comes in underground, which affects how a new meter base or larger service is run. Where service is overhead, tall trees put a strain on the mast and drop. During a service upgrade we check the mast, the meter base and the grounding, and we point out limbs that are close to the drop so you can talk to the utility or a tree service.

Permits and covenants

The Woodlands is an unincorporated area in Montgomery County, and the permit and inspection come from the office that covers your address, which we confirm first. We pull the permit, schedule the inspection and arrange the utility reconnect once the work passes. Panels inside the house seldom touch covenant review, but a new meter location or a new exterior enclosure on an outside wall might, so check with your village if the work changes what the outside looks like.

Questions we get every week

Electrical panel upgrade questions from The Woodlands.

What decides the price of a panel upgrade in The Woodlands?

The service size you need, the condition of the meter base and wiring, whether the feed is overhead or underground, the permit and any work the utility must do. We inspect the house and give a free written estimate.

Do I need a permit for a panel upgrade?

Inside city limits, yes: a panel change needs an electrical permit and an inspection. Outside them, we confirm what applies to your address. We pull it with the office that covers your address and schedule the inspection.

My house is very large. How do I know what size service I need?

We calculate it from the air conditioners, pool and spa equipment, kitchen appliances and everything else the house runs, rather than from square footage alone. The result tells us whether one panel, a panel with subpanels or a larger service makes sense.

Will the power be off for long?

It is off while the old panel comes out and the new one goes in, and we tell you the window before we start. A larger service takes longer, because the utility reconnects after the inspection.

Can you work around mature trees on an underground feed?

Yes. We plan the route to avoid major roots where we can, and we explain the options before digging begins.

Should I upgrade the panel before I add a generator or EV charger?

Often. Both add load, and a generator adds a transfer switch beside the panel. We can look at the panel and the new equipment together.

My insurer or a home inspector flagged my panel. What now?

Original panels in older village homes have often been patched with extra breakers over the years, so we look at the whole panel, not only the item flagged. Send us the report and a photo of the label inside the door, and we give you a written estimate you can share with the insurer. Our guide to old electrical panels shows what inspectors look for.
