Electrical · The Woodlands

Electrical service for a township of eight villages.

The Woodlands is about 25 to 30 minutes from our Tomball shop, depending on traffic.

The 2020 census counted more than 114,000 people in The Woodlands, yet it is not a city. It is a township and special-purpose district, and residents voted against incorporating in November 2021. Most of it lies in Montgomery County, with a smaller part, including the Village of Creekside Park, on the Harris County side of Spring Creek. That split decides which county's rules apply to an address, and the township's covenants add an approval step of their own.

Market Street is about 20 miles by road from our Tomball shop on Alice Road. Estimates are free. Call (713) 467-1125, answered 24/7.

The Woodlands

What electrical work in The Woodlands has to account for.

A township, so no city permit office

There is no city building department issuing electrical permits here. A Montgomery County Permit Department letter says the county does not enforce building codes on single-family homes in unincorporated areas, and the county's permit FAQ says it does no final inspection on homes outside the floodplain. In Creekside Park, the Harris County engineer's residential permit covers items such as pools, driveways and new homes, and does not list electrical work. Wired confirms what applies to your address and handles the permits and inspections the job needs.

Covenant approval for hard-wired equipment

The Woodlands' 2024 Residential Development Standards require prior written approval from the Residential Design Review Committee before you alter or add improvements on a lot with an existing home, and they name hard-wiring equipment to the source of electricity as something that needs approval. The RDRC is one of several Plan Review Committees, the township's covenant review bodies. Before we hard-wire a new piece of equipment at your house, we prepare the paperwork the committee asks for.

Villages that opened decades apart

The Woodlands was built in stages. Grogan's Mill opened with the community in 1974, Cochran's Crossing followed in 1983, Indian Springs in 1984, Alden Bridge in 1994 and Creekside Park in 2007. That puts more than 30 years between the openings of Grogan's Mill and Creekside Park. Before recommending an upgrade, a new circuit or a repair, we look at the panel's age, capacity and condition.

Falling limbs and storm outages

The township lists falling trees and limbs in severe weather among the most frequent causes of power outages in The Woodlands. A whole-home surge protector at the panel helps guard against spikes when power returns.

Entergy or CenterPoint, depending on location

Two utilities deliver power in The Woodlands. In CenterPoint Energy's area you choose a retail electric provider and CenterPoint handles outage restoration, while Entergy serves other parts of the community as a regulated utility with no provider choice. Either way, our work is the panel and the wiring in your house.

Questions

Questions we get from The Woodlands.

The Woodlands is not a city. Does that change who can do my electrical work?

No. The Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation says an electrician's license is required even in unincorporated areas. That holds in the Montgomery County villages and in Creekside Park alike.

Do I need the Residential Design Review Committee's approval for electrical work?

For some jobs, yes, such as hard-wiring an EV charger or a new appliance to the panel. Tell us what you plan to add, and Wired prepares the HOA paperwork if the committee needs it.

Do you work in Creekside Park on the Harris County side?

Yes. Creekside Park is in Harris County rather than Montgomery County, so we confirm which county requirements apply to your address before the work starts.

Which ZIP codes do you cover in The Woodlands?

We cover 77380, 77381 and 77382, plus the parts of 77384, 77385, 77386 and 77389 inside The Woodlands.

My utility is Entergy, not CenterPoint. Does that matter for an EV charger?

Not for the charger circuit. The circuit runs from your panel, so Wired checks the panel's remaining capacity and recommends what fits.

A limb pulled on my service mast. Do I call Entergy, CenterPoint or Wired?

Call your utility, CenterPoint or Entergy, about its lines. If the mast, meter base or wiring on the house is damaged, Wired inspects and repairs that equipment.
