Electrical service in the Montgomery County seat.
Conroe is about 40 minutes from our Tomball shop, depending on traffic.
Conroe sits on I-45 in central Montgomery County, seven miles southeast of Lake Conroe. It has been the county seat since 1889. Its first electric lights came on in 1906, powered by a generating plant on Stewarts Creek. The city counted 89,956 residents in the 2020 census. The Census Bureau named it the fastest-growing large U.S. city from 2015 to 2016.

Growth, permits and high water in Conroe.
Young houses, growing loads
About half of Conroe's homes were built in 2006 or later, according to Census estimates. About 41 percent date from 2010 or after. Whether one of those houses can take a Level 2 car charger, a garage shop or an outdoor kitchen depends on the room left in its panel. In the roughly 17 percent of Conroe homes built before 1980, we take a closer look at grounding and aging breakers.
Permits through the City of Conroe
Inside city limits, the Building Inspections and Permits Department at 700 Metcalf Street issues electrical permits. Since December 2025 it has handled them through the OpenGov portal. The city's FAQ says any change to a home's wiring needs a permit. A contractor who applies for a permit must hold a Texas license and register with the City of Conroe. The city's adopted code list names the 2026 National Electrical Code. On jobs inside city limits, Wired files the permit and books the inspection.
A Conroe ZIP is not always the City of Conroe
Conroe ZIP codes reach past the city line. The 77303 and 77306 ZIPs also carry the name of Cut and Shoot, a separate city, and 77304 carries Panorama Village. Both 77384 and 77385 list Shenandoah and The Woodlands as alternate place names, and 77385 also lists Oak Ridge North. At the estimate, Wired confirms which permit and inspection rules apply to your address.
Wiring after Conroe floods
A city damage assessment after Harvey in 2017 counted 242 Conroe homes affected. The McDade Estates subdivision was under mandatory evacuation around 2:30 a.m. on Aug. 28, 2017. On May 2, 2024, the West Fork near Conroe was forecast to crest almost nine feet above flood stage. River Plantation, Mosswood and Woodloch were under voluntary evacuation that day. After a flood, we check the outlets, wiring and panel for water damage.

Questions we get from Conroe.
Do you cover Lake Conroe and the Conroe ZIPs outside city limits?
Yes, across 77301, 77302, 77303, 77304, 77306, 77384 and 77385. That includes Cut and Shoot, Panorama Village, Woodloch and lake lots outside the city.
Does swapping a light fixture in Conroe need a permit?
Not if the wiring stays the same, per the city's permit FAQ. New circuits, panel work and other wiring changes do.
Can I pull my own electrical permit as a Conroe homeowner?
The city lets homeowners with a homestead exemption on file with the Montgomery County Appraisal District get construction permits for work on their own home. You register in OpenGov as a homestead owner and apply yourself. If you hire Wired instead, the permit filing is part of our job.
Is my newer Conroe home ready for an EV charger?
Maybe. It depends on what the existing panel already carries, such as electric heat or a pool pump. We check that at the free estimate to see whether a charger circuit fits or the panel needs an upgrade first.
My house near the West Fork took on water. What should I do?
Stay away from the panel if water is near it, and leave any tripped breakers off. Call (713) 467-1125 at any hour. Keep power off in the flooded rooms until the wiring has been tested.
