Electrician in Downtown Houston, TX

The City of Houston's planning department calls Downtown the birthplace of Houston, and the original 19th-century town center still sits around Market Square. By the City's count, Downtown went from 1,910 housing units in 2000 to 5,460 in 2019. Towers like One Park Place (346 units, 2009) and Market Square Tower (463 units, 2017) are part of that growth.

Lofts in former warehouses and office buildings

The Warehouse District held Downtown's first lofts. Other projects turned older, often vacant office and commercial space near Main Street and the Theater District into lofts. When a loft owner wants more lighting, a dedicated kitchen or workspace circuit, or an end to a breaker that keeps tripping, we can troubleshoot what feeds the unit and check what its panel can carry.

Downtown flooding and building electrical rooms

Tropical Storm Allison in 2001 put the tunnel system under water, along with streets and parking garages next to Buffalo Bayou. In Hurricane Harvey in 2017, the Alley Theatre's electrical room was destroyed and the Wortham Theater Center's basement filled. Houston First reported that Harvey left more than 270 million gallons of water in the Theater District parking garages. If your building's electrical room or garage-level meter took water, ask management whether the feeders were tested before your unit's power came back.

The May 2024 derecho

On May 16, 2024, a derecho hit downtown with gusts the National Weather Service estimated at up to 100 mph and blew out windows in many high-rises, including CenterPoint Energy Plaza. A wall collapsed on a brick building near Congress and Travis streets. More than a million customers in the Houston area and nearby counties lost power. If wind or rain damaged the fixtures or wiring in your unit, we can inspect and repair them.

Permits, building rules and the historic district

Downtown is inside the City of Houston, so electrical permits come from the Houston Permitting Center. In a loft or tower, the building may have its own rules for contractors, so check with management before work is scheduled. Old Sixth Ward has been a City of Houston Historic District since 1998, so ask the City about any exterior change to a house there before the job is booked.

Old Sixth Ward houses and Rice Military townhouses

In Old Sixth Ward, about 300 houses built between 1854 and 1935 still stood as of 2007, and a 2007 city ordinance protects the district from demolition. Farther west, Rice Military started as small bungalows and shotgun houses, and by 2003 it also had two- and three-story townhouses and condominiums. In an Old Sixth Ward house, we can inspect the panel and wiring and troubleshoot what is not working. In a Rice Military townhouse, we can add circuits, lighting or a Level 2 EV charger.
