How a Generac Generator Warranty Works

A generator warranty is a promise about repairs, but the details live in the paperwork. Knowing which kind of coverage you have makes a warranty claim go faster.

01

The manufacturer warranty

Every new Generac home standby generator comes with a factory warranty from Generac. It covers defects in the equipment itself, under the terms printed on your warranty certificate. The length and what it covers depend on the model, the date it was installed and how it was registered. Read the certificate that came with your unit, or ask us to look it up for you.

02

Extended generator warranty

An extended warranty adds coverage beyond the standard factory term. It may be included with the purchase or added later, depending on the offer at the time. The terms can differ from the standard warranty, so keep the extended warranty paperwork with your other generator records. If you are not sure whether your unit has one, call us with the serial number.

03

Installation and workmanship

A factory warranty covers the generator. The installation, such as the wiring, the gas connection and the transfer switch hookup, is the installer's work. When Wired installs your generator, we stand behind our work and come back to fix anything we did wrong. Ask us what applies to your install when you get your estimate. Keep the installer's invoice with your warranty papers, because it shows who did the work and when.

Generator Warranty Registration and Keeping Records

The most common warranty problem is not the generator. It is missing paperwork. A few simple habits save a lot of trouble later.

01

Register the generator after install

Warranty registration ties the generator's serial number to your address and install date. Without it, a claim can be delayed while the dates get sorted out. Ask your installer whether they registered the unit for you, and keep the confirmation. If you are not sure it was done, we can check. Registration takes a few minutes and it is much easier to do on day one than years later when a part has already failed.

02

Keep proof of purchase and service records

Keep your invoice, the warranty certificate and every service record in one folder. A photo of each on your phone works too. If a part fails, the first questions are when the unit was installed, who installed it and whether it was maintained. Having the answers ready keeps the claim moving. If you bought the house with a generator already in place, ask the seller for these papers before closing.

03

Generator warranty lookup by serial number

The model and serial numbers are on a label on the generator, usually inside the enclosure or on the side. Take a clear photo of that label. With it, we can look up your coverage and tell you what is likely covered before anyone opens the unit. Text the photo to (713) 467-1125. If the label is faded or hard to reach, do not take the enclosure apart. Tell us and we will read it on the visit.

What a Generator Warranty Usually Does and Does Not Cover

Every warranty is different, so your certificate has the final word. These are the general patterns we see.

01

Defects in parts and the factory build

A factory warranty is meant for parts that fail because of a defect, such as a controller, a sensor or an engine part that was faulty from the start. When a covered part fails, the repair is filed with the manufacturer. Whether labor and travel are included depends on the terms you have. We explain what is covered and what is not before we start, so you are not surprised by a bill. If part of the repair falls outside the warranty, you decide whether to go ahead.

02

Wear items and routine maintenance

Oil, filters, spark plugs and other parts that wear out with normal use are usually treated as maintenance, not warranty repairs. Batteries often have their own terms. Yearly service keeps those parts fresh, and it is the owner's job to schedule it. We can tell you what your terms say about these items. Replacing a worn battery before storm season is easier than finding out it is dead during an outage.

03

Damage from outside causes

Flooding, lightning, pests, impact damage and problems from the wrong fuel are generally not treated as defects. Damage from someone working on the unit without the right training can also cause trouble with a claim. If outside damage happens, your homeowners insurance may be the place to start, and we can document what we find. Take photos of the damage before anything is moved, since your insurer may ask for them.

04

Missed maintenance and unapproved changes

Many warranties expect the generator to be maintained as the manual describes. Skipping service for years, or changes made to the unit by someone outside the dealer network, can make a claim harder. Keeping your service records is the simplest way to avoid that question. If your generator has gone a while without service, it is not too late. Book a service visit now so the unit is checked and the record starts fresh before the next storm.

Generator Warranty Repair: How the Process Works

When a covered part fails, there is a process between your phone call and a running generator. Here is how it usually goes.

01

Call with the model, serial and what happened

Tell us the brand, model and serial number, what the generator did and any code on the display. If the power is out and the unit will not run, say so. Our phones are open 24/7, and we tell you when a technician can be there. Do not keep trying to start a unit that is cranking and failing, and do not open the transfer switch or panel. Those steps can cause more damage and make the repair harder.

02

Diagnosis before parts

A technician tests the unit to find the actual cause. The same alarm can come from several problems, so we confirm the failed part before we order anything. If the cause turns out to be a wear item or outside damage, we tell you before doing the work. That way you only pay for what is not covered, and you know about it ahead of time.

03

Filing the claim and ordering parts

For a covered failure on a Generac, we file the warranty claim as the dealer and order the part. Some parts are in stock and some have to ship, especially during storm season when demand is high. We keep you updated and let you know when the part is in. If the outage is still going while you wait, ask us about safe ways to keep the essentials running in the meantime.

04

Repair, test and paperwork

Once the part is installed, we test the generator and run a transfer so you know it will carry the house. You get a record of what was replaced. Add it to your generator folder with the rest of your warranty records. If the same problem comes back, call us and give us the date of the last repair so we can see the history right away.

Warranty Questions for Special Situations

Not every warranty call starts with a generator we installed last year. These are the situations we get asked about most.

01

Generators installed by another company

We can do warranty service on Generac units installed by someone else. The claim depends on the unit's registration and history, so the paperwork matters even more. If the installing company is no longer around, call us anyway and we will tell you what we can do. Bring whatever papers you have, even if they are incomplete. A photo of the serial label and the old invoice is often enough to get started.

02

Buying a house that already has a generator

If you are buying a home with a standby generator, ask the seller for the invoice, warranty certificate and service records. Whether the warranty carries over to a new owner depends on the terms. We can inspect the unit and look up its coverage before or after closing. A unit that has sat unused for a long time may need service before it can be counted on, even if it looks fine from the outside.

03

Kohler and other brand warranties

Other brands, including Kohler, have their own warranty programs and their own dealer networks for claims. We can service and repair other brands, but a warranty claim on another brand may need to go through that brand's dealer. Tell us the brand when you call, and we will be clear about what we can handle. Keep in mind that work done outside a brand's own network can affect a claim, so ask before any repair starts.

04

Warranty vs a maintenance plan

A warranty covers defects. A maintenance plan, such as our Shield Protection plan, covers scheduled care so the generator stays ready and problems get caught early. They work together. Ask us which plan fits your generator. Yearly service under a plan also builds the maintenance record that a warranty claim may call for. If a repair is needed, the service history is already in place, and the technician knows the unit before the outage, not during it.
