It only comes off the units on our floor, so when they're gone, it's gone. New air-cooled Generac installs come with a free 10-year warranty, and financing is there if you want it. Permit timing depends on your city or county. The install itself is usually one day.
Maintenance plans: once a year is what we recommend
We recommend a full maintenance service once a year. Our Shield Protection plans are twelve-month plans sized to your generator, and every level includes 24/7 remote monitoring. Call (713) 467-1125 for plan pricing.
Silver: the yearly plan we recommend
Silver includes one annual maintenance service, 24/7 remote monitoring and a free home electrical and generator safety inspection. For most homes that is the right fit: the generator gets a full service every year, and if it reports a problem between visits, we see it on the monitoring side before you need it in an outage.
Bronze: monitoring, maintenance as you go
Bronze gives you 24/7 remote monitoring and pay-as-you-go maintenance. It suits owners who want us watching the generator but prefer to book and pay for each service visit when it is due. We still recommend scheduling that service once a year so the oil, filters, battery and transfer switch get checked.
Gold: two services a year plus a load test
Gold adds a second maintenance visit, so the generator is serviced every six months, plus a yearly load test and the free safety inspection. It makes sense for generators that run often, homes with medical equipment, or owners who simply want a second check before storm season and before winter.
Platinum: maintenance as needed and storm priority
Platinum covers maintenance as needed, a yearly load test, first-call storm priority, a 48-hour service guarantee, 10 percent off electrical services and the free safety inspection. It is built for owners who want the generator handled completely. See the Shield Protection page for the full plan details by generator size.
Why Standby Generators in Houston Need Regular Maintenance
A standby generator can sit quietly for months and still wear out. Houston weather makes that worse, not better.
A generator that sits still is still aging
Oil breaks down over time even when the engine barely runs. Batteries lose strength sitting in a hot enclosure. Rubber hoses, belts and seals dry out and crack. Wiring connections loosen with heat cycles. None of that shows up until the unit is asked to run for days in a row, which is exactly when you need it most.
Heat, humidity and storms are hard on equipment
Houston summers bake the enclosure, and humidity works its way into connections and control boards. Storms push debris, standing water and wet leaves around the base of the unit. A generator near the coast or by a sprinkler head sees even more corrosion. Annual generator maintenance is how we catch that wear while it is still small.
The weekly exercise is not maintenance
Most standby generators run a short self test every week. That exercise keeps the engine lubricated and confirms it can start. It does not change the oil, test the battery under load, check the valve clearance or confirm the transfer switch moves the house over. A unit can pass its weekly test and still fail in the first hours of a real outage.
Long outages add up fast
During a big storm, a standby generator can run around the clock for days. That puts more hours on the engine in one week than it sees in normal weekly tests for a long time. After an extended outage, the oil, filters and spark plugs may be due no matter when the last visit was. Call us once the grid is back and we will check it.
Generac Maintenance Schedule and Annual Generator Service
Generac, like every standby manufacturer, publishes a maintenance schedule in the owner's manual. We follow it for your model.
How the Generac maintenance schedule works
Generac sets service intervals by run hours and by time, whichever comes first. For most homes that weekly testing is light, so the time limit comes first and the unit is serviced once a year. Homes that run the generator a lot during storms may reach the hours limit sooner. The model number on the data label tells us which schedule applies.
Air-cooled and liquid-cooled units
Most home standby generators are air-cooled, and their service centers on oil, filters, spark plugs, the battery and valve checks. Larger liquid-cooled units add coolant, hoses, belts and a radiator to the list. The visit takes longer and has more parts to inspect. We tell you which type you have and what that means for its upkeep.
The maintenance reminder on the controller
Many Generac controllers show a maintenance reminder or alert when service is due by the clock or by hours. It is a reminder, not a failure. The unit will still run, but it is telling you it is time. We service the unit and reset the reminder as part of the visit.
Why storm season timing matters
The best time for generator annual maintenance is before hurricane season, when there is time to order a part and fix it calmly. Once a storm is in the forecast, every technician in Houston is busy. Planning your yearly service in the spring keeps your unit ready and keeps you off the waiting list.
What You Can Do Between Service Visits
Owners do not need tools to help a generator stay healthy. A few look-only habits catch problems early.
Keep the area around the unit clear
Leave clear space around the enclosure for airflow and service access. Trim shrubs, keep mulch and leaves away from the base and do not stack anything against it. Watch for fire ant mounds, wasp nests and rodent signs near the unit, because they move inside and chew or short wiring. Never spray water or chemicals into the enclosure.
Watch the weekly exercise and status lights
Know what day and time your generator exercises, and listen for it now and then. Check that the controller is in AUTO and that the status light shows ready. If it shows a warning, missed its test or sounds different, write down what you saw and call us. A note now often prevents a repair later.
Use Mobile Link if you have it
Generac Mobile Link lets you see the generator's status, exercise history and alerts on your phone. Many owners hear about a problem from the app before the unit is ever needed. If you share access with us as your servicing dealer, we can see faults too. Ask us about setting it up on an existing unit.
Keep propane topped up
If your generator runs on propane, keep an eye on the tank level, especially before storm season. A low tank is one of the most common reasons a generator stops during a long outage. Natural gas units do not need refilling, but tell us if the gas company has changed your meter, because supply changes can affect how the unit runs.
Generator Won't Start: How Maintenance Prevents It
Most failures we see during outages trace back to something a maintenance visit would have caught. If your generator will not start right now, our generator repair page walks through the safe checks.
Battery testing and replacement on schedule
A weak battery is the top reason a standby generator will not start. Batteries age in the heat whether the generator runs or not. During maintenance we load test the battery and check the charger, so a tired battery gets replaced on a sunny day instead of failing during a storm.
Oil level, oil condition and low oil shutdowns
The controller shuts the engine down to protect it when the oil is low. Old oil also gets thinner and less protective in the heat. Fresh oil and a full level at every service keep the engine from tripping a low oil alarm in the middle of an outage. We also look for leaks that would drop the level between visits.
Pests, debris and wiring
Rodents and insects like the shelter of a generator enclosure. They nest in it, chew wire insulation and block air intakes. During a maintenance visit we open the enclosure, clear out debris and look over the wiring and connectors. Finding a chewed wire during maintenance is a small fix. Finding it during a hurricane is a long night.
Spark plugs, air filter and fuel connections
Worn spark plugs and a dirty air filter make an engine hard to start and rough under load. Fuel line connections can loosen or corrode. Each of these is checked during the annual service and replaced when it is due, which keeps hard starts from turning into no starts. We also look for signs that the engine has been running rough, such as soot or oil residue, which can point to a problem worth fixing early.
Generator Maintenance for Every Brand and Every Install
You do not need to have bought your generator from us to have us maintain it.
Generac maintenance from a Prestige Dealer
Wired is a Generac Prestige Dealer, and Generac is the brand we service most. We use Generac parts and follow the factory maintenance schedule for your model. That matters for performance, and it gives you a clear service record if you ever need to show one to a warranty provider. Our technicians see the same models again and again, so they know where each one tends to wear.
Kohler, Briggs and Stratton and other brands
We maintain Kohler, Briggs and Stratton, Champion and other standby generators too. The basics are the same from brand to brand: oil, filters, battery, ignition, fuel supply, controller and transfer switch. Tell us the brand and model number when you call, and we bring what the unit needs. Each manufacturer has its own schedule and parts, and we follow the one for your unit.
Units that were installed by someone else
If your generator came with the house or was installed by a company that is no longer around, the first visit is a catch-up. We check the condition of the unit, the pad, the gas line and the transfer switch, and we tell you what is overdue. From there it goes on a normal yearly schedule.
Shield Protection plans
If you would rather not track service dates, a Shield Protection plan puts the visit on our calendar for you. Plans include monitoring and storm priority. See the Shield Protection page for what each plan covers, or ask us when you call. A plan also means someone else remembers when the battery is getting old or when a part was flagged at the last visit. It is the easiest way to make sure maintenance actually happens every year.
Commercial and Diesel Generator Maintenance
Businesses depend on their generators in a different way, and larger units need a deeper service.
Commercial standby generators
Offices, clinics, churches, restaurants and small facilities often run larger liquid-cooled generators with bigger transfer switches. Downtime costs money, and some sites need records for an inspector, a landlord or an insurer. We schedule maintenance around business hours and keep written notes on each visit. Larger units may also need service more than once a year, depending on run hours and how critical the load is. We set a schedule that matches the site and the manufacturer's guidance.
Diesel generator maintenance
Diesel units need more than an oil change. Fuel stored in a tank ages and can grow algae or collect water, which clogs filters and hurts injectors. Coolant, belts and block heaters also need attention. We check fuel condition, change fuel and oil filters and inspect the cooling system as part of a diesel service.
Load testing and transfer testing
A generator that only runs with no load is not proven ready. For commercial sites, a transfer test with your approval confirms the generator carries the building and the switch moves back to utility power properly. We schedule it with you so the brief power interruption does not catch anyone off guard.
Generac Maintenance Plan or One-Time Service: How to Choose
You can book a single service visit whenever you need one, or put the generator on a plan so it gets done without you thinking about it. Both work. Here is how they compare.
A one-time annual service visit
A single visit suits owners who like to schedule things themselves. You call, we book a technician, and the generator gets the full service on the checklist above. The catch is remembering. Many generators that fail during an outage were simply never serviced after the first year. If you go this route, put a reminder on your calendar for before storm season every year.
A Shield Protection maintenance plan
A Shield Protection plan takes the remembering off your plate. Service is scheduled for you on the interval your plan covers, the generator can report to us through remote monitoring, and plan customers get storm priority when the Gulf gets busy. For most Houston homes, the yearly plan we recommend is the simplest way to keep a generator ready without tracking it yourself.
Who each option fits
A plan fits families who rely on the generator for medical equipment, people who travel or own a second home, and anyone who knows a reminder will get lost. A one-time visit fits owners who keep good records and do not mind booking it each year. Either way, the generator needs a full service at least once a year to stay ready.
Moving your generator to Wired
If another company maintained your generator before, or nobody has in a while, you can move it to Wired at any time. Tell us the brand, model and the last service date you know of. On the first visit, we bring the unit up to date on the factory schedule, check the battery and transfer switch, and start a clean service record from there.
After the Visit: Reports, Repairs and Records
A maintenance visit should leave you knowing more about your generator than before. Here is what happens once the technician is done.
The summary report
After every service, you get a summary of what was done and what the technician saw: oil and filter work, battery test results, the condition of the enclosure and wiring, and how the transfer test went. If something is starting to wear but does not need attention yet, the report says so. That way nothing about your generator comes as a surprise later.
When the technician finds a problem
Maintenance sometimes turns up a part that is failing, like a weak battery, a worn starter or a loose gas connection. The technician explains what it is and why it matters, and we tell you what the repair involves before any work is done. Small items can often be handled on the same visit. Bigger ones get scheduled with you.
Service records and your warranty
Warranty providers can ask for proof that a generator was maintained. Keep the summary report from every visit in one place, along with your model and serial number. We keep records of the service we do as well. If you are not sure what your warranty requires, check its terms or ask us, and we will help you read it.
Bought a house that came with a generator
Houses across the Houston area often come with a standby generator already in the yard. If yours did, book a service visit soon after you move in. You may not know when it was last maintained. We check its condition, help you set up Mobile Link if the unit supports it, and show you how the controller and weekly exercise work.
Generac maintenance and annual generator service
A standby generator sits for months and has to start the one night it matters. Annual maintenance is how you make sure it does.
Generac maintenance
Oil and filter, battery test, a look at the belts, hoses and fuel connections, and a test run under load. Generac asks for service on a schedule, and we do it the way the manual says.
Generator annual maintenance
Once a year, before storm season. We write down what we found and tell you if anything needs attention before it becomes a repair.
Skip the reminder: Shield Protection
Shield Protection plans put the visit on our calendar for you, with monitoring and storm priority. See the plans.
Ask us anything. These come up most.
How often does a Generac generator need maintenance?
Once a year at minimum, and sooner if it runs a lot during storms. The annual visit covers oil, filter, battery and a test run.
Is a maintenance visit the same as a repair?
No. Maintenance is the planned visit that keeps it ready. A repair is when something has already failed. Maintenance is how you avoid most repairs.
How much does generator maintenance cost?
It depends on the brand and model, air-cooled or liquid-cooled, what parts are due, whether the battery needs replacing and how long it has been since the last service. Every unit is different, so we do not post a number here. Call (713) 467-1125 and we give you a written estimate for your unit.
How often should a Generac generator be serviced?
Generac sets intervals by hours and time, whichever comes first. For most homes that means once a year, and sooner after heavy storm use. We follow the schedule in the manual for your model.
Can I do my own generator maintenance?
Owners can keep the area clear, watch the weekly test, check the controller is in AUTO and keep propane topped up. Opening the enclosure for oil, plugs and valve work involves a live battery, an automatic start and connections to your home's power. For safety and a clean service record, leave that to a trained technician.
What does the maintenance light on my Generac mean?
It usually means service is due by time or run hours. The generator still works, but it is asking for its scheduled maintenance. We service it and reset the reminder. If the light is red or shows a fault code instead, write the code down and call us.
Does annual maintenance include a new battery?
The visit includes testing the battery and charger. Replacing the battery is a separate part when it is needed. We tell you if it is weak before we replace anything.
Will you service a generator you did not install?
Yes. We maintain Generac, Kohler and other brands whether or not we installed them. The first visit catches the unit up and then it goes on a yearly schedule.
Why does my generator need service if it runs fine every week?
The weekly test only proves it can start and run briefly with no load. Maintenance replaces worn oil and parts, tests the battery under load and checks the transfer switch, which is what keeps it running for days during a real outage.
Do you offer generator maintenance near me?
Wired is based in Tomball with technicians serving Houston and the surrounding area. Call (713) 467-1125 any time. Phones are open 24/7.
Will regular maintenance keep my Generac warranty valid?
Following the factory maintenance schedule and keeping records of each service is the best way to protect your warranty. Warranty terms vary, so check yours. As a Generac Prestige Dealer, we follow the Generac schedule, use Generac parts and give you a summary after each visit that you can keep with your records.
What happens if the technician finds a problem during maintenance?
The technician explains what was found and why it matters, and we tell you what the repair involves and costs before any work is done. Small fixes can often be done on the same visit. Larger repairs or parts that need to be ordered get scheduled with you.
Is a maintenance plan better than paying for one visit at a time?
Both keep the generator serviced. A Shield Protection plan schedules the service for you and adds benefits like monitoring and storm priority, so it suits people who would rather not keep track. Paying per visit suits owners who are good about booking service every year before storm season.
I bought a house with a generator. What should I do first?
Book a service visit, since you may not know when it was last maintained. We check the battery, oil, wiring and transfer switch, set it back on the factory schedule, help you set up Mobile Link if the unit supports it, and show you how the controller and weekly exercise work.
