Generator repair and maintenance

Generator repair and maintenance for The Woodlands homes.

In a forested community such as The Woodlands, a power outage is not a rare event. Wind and heavy rain drop limbs on lines, and many homeowners have installed standby generators so the lights and the air conditioning stay on. Wired Electrical & Generators is a Generac Prestige Dealer and a family-owned, licensed and insured electrician. Our showroom and shop are at 13910 Alice Road in Tomball, and we have served Greater Houston since 2005.

We repair and maintain Generac generators and other brands, including Kohler, no matter who installed them. Call (713) 467-1125 if your unit shows a fault code, will not start or has gone a year or more without a visit. We will ask what the controller shows and what the generator did.

The Woodlands

What The Woodlands jobs look like.

Pine needles, leaves and a clean enclosure

Heavy tree cover is part of what people like about The Woodlands, and it is also hard on a generator. Pine needles and leaves collect around the enclosure and the intake and exhaust openings, and wet debris against the cabinet holds moisture. Leaf litter on the ground around the pad can also hide a nest of insects or rodents. When we service a unit here, we clear what we can, check the louvers and air flow, and tell you how much space to keep around the generator all year. A few minutes with a rake before storm season helps.

Why a spring visit makes sense

Annual maintenance covers oil and filters, spark plugs, the battery, the enclosure and a test run under load, and we read the controller history for warnings that nobody noticed. Many Woodlands owners book a visit in spring, ahead of hurricane season, so the unit is ready when a storm blows through. Battery failure is a common reason for a no-start. A generator that ran for days in an outage should also be checked afterward.

Generator will not start: safe checks first

If your generator did not start during an outage, check the controller, which should read AUTO, confirm the generator's own breaker is on and confirm there is fuel. Write down any fault code on the display. Leave the transfer switch and the panel closed. Call us with the brand, model and what you saw, and we will tell you what the next step is. Many homes in The Woodlands run on natural gas, but larger lots may have propane tanks, and the level is worth checking.

Covenants, placement and who approves what

The Woodlands is an unincorporated community in Montgomery County with covenants administered by village, and exterior changes, including where a generator sits and how it is screened, often need a design review. Routine service does not. If you are moving a unit, replacing it with a different size or running a new gas line, check the covenants before work begins. Permits come from the office that covers your address, and we find out which before we start. We can also tell you whether an older unit is worth repairing.

Questions we get every week

Generator repair and maintenance questions from The Woodlands.

My generator will not start. What can I check?

Look at the controller, which should read AUTO, check that the generator's breaker is on, confirm there is fuel and note any fault code. Leave the transfer switch and the electrical panel closed, and call (713) 467-1125.

How often should a standby generator be serviced?

At least once a year, and many owners choose spring. Service includes the battery, a common cause of failure to start. Units that ran through a long outage should be checked afterward.

Do you service generators you did not install?

Yes. We work on Generac and other brands, including Kohler. Tell us at the start if the unit is under warranty through Wired, Generac or another provider.

How much room should I keep around the generator?

Keep leaves, pine straw, mulch and plants away from the enclosure and the vents, and keep the area around the pad clear. Ask us at the visit what clearance your model needs. The manual for the unit lists it.

Does the Township or my village need to approve generator service?

Routine repair and maintenance usually does not. Moving or adding a unit often needs covenant review and a permit. Ask your village or covenant office before work begins.

Can I get Generac parts from the Tomball showroom?

Yes. Call with the model and serial number, and we will confirm the part and set it aside for pickup on Alice Road. Wiring, fuel and transfer switch work should be left to a technician.
