Generator repair and maintenance

Generator repair and maintenance for Cypress homes.

Plenty of Cypress homeowners put in a standby generator after the long outages of the last few years, and a lot of those units have run only a few minutes a week since. Wired Electrical & Generators is a Generac Prestige Dealer and a family-owned, licensed and insured electrician, with a shop at 13910 Alice Road in Tomball. We have served Greater Houston since 2005, and generator repair is a regular part of our week.

We service Generac and other brands, including Kohler, and you do not need to have bought the generator from us. If yours will not start, shows a fault code or has never been serviced, call (713) 467-1125 and tell us what the controller says. The symptoms usually point to the cause, and we like to bring the right parts on the first trip.

Cypress

What Cypress jobs look like.

Generators in the big Cypress communities

In large communities such as Towne Lake and Bridgeland, a standby generator often sits in a side yard a few feet from the fence, the air conditioner condensers and the sprinkler heads. That tight spot is hard on a generator: water from sprinklers, grass clippings and mulch pile up around the enclosure, and insects find their way in. When we service a unit in a neighborhood like this, we look at the clearance around it and tell you what to move. Many HOAs also have rules on where a generator can sit and how it is screened, which matters if you plan to relocate it.

Hurricane season and humid Gulf Coast air

Cypress takes the same humid weather as the rest of the Houston area, and moisture is one of the things that shortens a generator's life. Condensation in the enclosure, corroded battery terminals and damp connections cause starting trouble that looks mysterious until someone opens the cabinet. A spring visit, ahead of hurricane season, covers oil, filters, spark plugs, the battery and a test under load. If your unit ran for days during an outage, have it checked afterward as well, because the oil and filters have real hours on them.

Generator will not start: what to check safely

If the generator did not start during an outage, you can look at a few things without opening anything. The controller should read AUTO, the generator's own breaker should be on, and the fuel should be there, meaning the gas valve is open or the propane tank is not empty. Write down any fault code. Leave the transfer switch and the electrical panel closed. Cypress is on natural gas in most subdivisions, so a gas supply problem is worth mentioning to us when you call, along with the brand and model.

Gas lines, permits and relocating a unit

Most Cypress addresses are in unincorporated Harris County, and some fall inside a city, so the permit office depends on the address. Moving a generator, adding a larger unit or changing the gas line can need permits, and we check with the right office first. We also look at whether an older unit still suits the house. If you have added an air conditioner, a pool or an EV charger since the generator went in, it may be too small for what you now plug into it, and we explain the options without pushing a replacement.

Questions we get every week

Generator repair and maintenance questions from Cypress.

My generator will not start. What can I check?

Look at the controller, which should read AUTO, check that the generator's breaker is on, confirm there is fuel and note any fault code. Leave the transfer switch and the electrical panel closed. Call (713) 467-1125 with what you found.

How often should a standby generator be serviced?

At least once a year, and many owners pick a spring visit before hurricane season. The visit includes the battery, which is a common reason for a failure to start. A unit that ran for days in an outage should be checked afterward.

Do you service generators that another company installed?

Yes. We work on Generac and other brands, including Kohler. If the unit is under warranty through Wired, Generac or another provider, tell us at the start, since coverage depends on the provider.

Is my generator big enough after I added an air conditioner?

It depends on what you want it to run. Adding a second air conditioner, a pool pump or a charger can push a smaller unit past its limit, and we can look at the load and tell you what the generator will carry.

Can I pick up Generac parts at your Tomball showroom?

Yes. Call with your generator's model and serial number, and we will confirm the right part and set it aside for pickup on Alice Road. Wiring, fuel and transfer switch work should be left to a technician.

Does my HOA need to approve generator work?

For repair and maintenance, usually not, but moving a unit or adding a new one often does. Check your community's rules before the work starts, and we can give you the details you need for the request.
