Electrical Panel Upgrade in Houston, TX
Breaker box replacement and service upgrades for older Houston houses, permitted and inspected, from a family-owned shop in Tomball.
Electrical panel upgrade for Houston homes.
Most panel upgrades in Houston start with an ordinary problem: a breaker that keeps tripping, no room for a new circuit, or a project such as a charger, a second air conditioner or a generator that the old panel cannot carry. Wired Electrical & Generators is a family-owned, licensed and insured electrician and Generac Prestige Dealer. Our shop is at 13910 Alice Road in Tomball, and Houston is one of the service areas we cover, not our home address.
Houston housing varies more than almost anywhere. A 1930s bungalow, a 1960s ranch house and a new townhome each need a different answer. We start with a free estimate and a look at the panel, the meter and the loads you want to add, then tell you what is actually needed.
What Houston jobs look like.
Older bungalows in the Heights and nearby
Houses in the Heights and similar older neighborhoods were wired for a few lights and a radio, and later added to room by room. Panels can be small, fuses may still be in use, and branch circuits sometimes feed far more than they should. Replacing the panel often means new grounding, a new meter base and sorting out circuits that were extended with no record. We tell you what we find, mark what is required and what is optional, and flag anything that deserves a closer look in the walls.
Mid-century ranch houses in Spring Branch and Northwest Houston
Brick ranch houses on the north and northwest side often have a panel that was fine in 1965 and is full today. Add central air, a second system, an electric range, a pool or a home office and you run out of slots long before you run out of patience. Sometimes a subpanel solves it, and sometimes the whole service has to grow. We calculate the load before we recommend anything.
Townhomes and infill
Houston has many tall, narrow townhomes and rebuilt lots, where the panel can be in a utility closet, in a garage or on an outside wall facing the street. The meter location and the room to work decide how the job goes. We check access, working clearance and the route of the service before the day of the job.
Flood-damaged and surge-damaged panels
After a flood, a panel that was under water should not simply be dried out and switched back on. After a long outage and a surge, breakers can fail in ways you cannot see. We inspect, replace what needs replacing and add whole-home surge protection at the panel if you want it.
Permits and the utility
Where the city requires it, a panel change gets an electrical permit and an inspection. For Houston addresses that means the city's permit process, and for addresses outside the city it is the county or city that covers them. We confirm which before we quote, pull the permit and schedule the inspection. Your electric utility then reconnects service once the work has passed.

Electrical panel upgrade questions from Houston.
Do you do panel upgrades in Houston, or only near Tomball?
We do them in Houston. Our shop is in Tomball and Houston is a service area, with the north and northwest side the easiest for us to reach. Call (713) 467-1125 with your address.
Do I need a permit for a panel upgrade in Houston?
Inside city limits, yes: a panel change needs an electrical permit and an inspection. Outside them, we confirm what applies to your address. We pull the permit with the office that covers your address and schedule the inspection.
My Heights house still has a fuse box. Do I have to replace it?
Not always by law, but many insurance companies and mortgage lenders ask about it, and fuse boxes struggle with modern loads. We look at the wiring behind it and explain the options.
Do I need 200 amp service?
Not every house does. A house adding an EV charger, a second air conditioner or a pool often needs more than a small bungalow with gas heat. We add up the load before recommending a size.
How long will the power be off during an upgrade?
Power is off while the old panel is swapped for the new one, and we tell you the window before we start. It runs longer if the meter base or service has to change, because the utility has to reconnect after the inspection.
Should I upgrade the panel before adding a standby generator?
Often, yes. A generator adds a transfer switch beside the panel, and a crowded or outdated panel makes that harder. We can look at both together.
