Before You Add an EV Charger or Generator, Check Your Panel

An EV charger and a standby generator both put real demands on your electrical panel, and an older or full panel may not be able to carry either.

Before You Add an EV Charger or Generator, Check Your Panel

The main things to look at are the panel's amperage rating, how many open spaces it has, its age and brand, and how much your home already uses with the AC running. A Level 2 EV charger needs its own dedicated circuit, and it is a large continuous load. A generator needs a transfer switch tied into the panel.

If the panel is full, undersized or a known problem brand, an upgrade comes first. We measure the load and tell you plainly what is needed, and what is not.

Questions we get every week

Ask us anything. These come up most.

Do I need a bigger panel for an EV charger?

Sometimes. It depends on your current load and the panel's capacity, which we check before installing.

Should I upgrade the panel before adding a generator?

If the panel is full, old or undersized, yes. We check it on the free visit.
