Emergency Electrician in Houston, TX

A 24 hour electrician for Houston homes, with an honest word about the drive from our Tomball shop.

Emergency electrician

Emergency electrician for Houston homes.

A sparking outlet at midnight is not the time to fill out a form. Wired Electrical & Generators is a family-owned, licensed and insured electrician, and our phones at (713) 467-1125 are open 24/7. We take emergency calls from Houston homeowners, and we want to be plain about how that works: our shop is at 13910 Alice Road in Tomball, and Houston is a service area for us, not the place we are parked.

Houston is a very large city, so the address you give us decides a lot. Homes on the north and northwest side are the ones we reach most easily. Start with safety, and then call. If you see flames or heavy smoke, leave the house and dial 911 first. For anything less, the sections below explain what to do and what to tell us.

Houston

What Houston jobs look like.

Where we are, and what that means for you

The drive from Tomball into Houston is roughly 30 to 45 minutes depending on traffic, which is an estimate and not a promise. Interstate 45, U.S. 290, Beltway 8 and the Hardy Toll Road are the usual routes, and all of them can slow down at the wrong hour. A call from Spring Branch or the north side will generally be easier for us to reach than one deep inside Loop 610. Tell us your cross streets when you call, and we will be direct about the distance and about what you can do to make things safe while you wait.

Heights bungalows and other older houses

Houses in the Heights and other older neighborhoods were often built decades before central air, microwaves and home offices. We see original wiring that has been added to over the years, small panels full of doubled-up breakers, and two-prong outlets that were swapped without a ground. A warm switch plate, a light that dims when the air conditioner starts, or a breaker that trips every afternoon can mean a connection is overheating. Call about those too, even if everything is working right now.

Spring Branch, Cypress Station and Northwest Houston

Much of Spring Branch and the north and northwest side was built out in the middle of the last century as brick ranch houses, and many have been added onto since. A room added to a garage or a second air conditioner can overload a circuit that was never meant for it. Townhomes and newer infill houses have their own problems, such as a panel tucked in a tight closet or a meter on the street side. When you call, tell us whether the house is old, rebuilt or new, and where the panel is.

Flooding, storms and the utility line

Houston has had Hurricane Harvey in 2017, Winter Storm Uri in 2021 and Hurricane Beryl in 2024, and each one left electrical damage behind. Do not turn on a panel that has been under water, and stay out of any standing water near outlets or equipment. Downed lines belong to the utility, so keep back and report them to 911 and the utility. If only your house is dark while neighbors have power, the trouble may be on your side of the meter, and that is where we work.

Permits after an emergency repair

If a repair replaces a panel, a meter base or service wiring, it usually needs a permit and an inspection before the utility reconnects. In Houston, permits are handled through the city's online permit system, and we deal with that for you. Some Houston-area addresses fall under Harris County or another city instead, so we check which office covers your address before we start.

Questions we get every week

Emergency electrician questions from Houston.

Do you really cover Houston if your shop is in Tomball?

Yes. Our shop is in Tomball and Houston is a service area for us. We cover the north and northwest side most easily and will take calls from other parts of the city. When you phone (713) 467-1125, give us your address and we will tell you plainly how far we are.

What should I do first if I smell burning or see sparks?

If there is fire or heavy smoke, get everyone out and call 911. If not, turn off the breaker for that circuit only if you can reach the panel while standing on dry ground, keep people away, and call us. Do not keep using an outlet or fixture that smells hot.

Is the outage my house or the utility?

Look at the street. If your neighbors are dark, the cause is likely on the utility side. If only your house is out, the problem may be in your panel or on the house side of the meter, and we can help you sort it out by phone.

My Heights house has an old panel that keeps tripping. Is that an emergency?

A breaker that trips once after you plug in a space heater is usually an overloaded circuit. A breaker that trips again and again, a panel that buzzes or feels warm, or a burning smell is more serious. Turn off what you can and call us so we can decide how quickly to come.

Can you work on a house that flooded?

Yes. We inspect what the water reached, replace what should not be reused and leave the rest alone. Do not switch the power back on until the panel has been checked. Anything we replace is permitted and inspected like other electrical work.

Do you handle the permit after an emergency repair?

Yes. If the repair needs a permit, we handle it with the office that covers your address and schedule the inspection.
