Backup power for a river town whose water plant flooded in Harvey

Woodloch is about 35 minutes without traffic from our Tomball shop.

During Harvey in 2017, the mayor said the Lake Conroe dam released 79,000 cubic feet per second, more than double the 1994 record. Needham Fire Department crews made an estimated 25 water rescues in town. Harvey's floodwater also submerged the town water plant's boost pump and electrical lines, and the town went under a boil-water notice, so power and water can both be affected in the same storm.

Woodloch is about 35 minutes from our Tomball shop and showroom without traffic. Generac standby units are in stock and on our showroom floor. A new install starts with a free in-home sizing visit. Call (713) 467-1125.

Planning a generator in Woodloch

Placement in and around a zone AE floodplain

The town's posted permit form comes already checked for a FEMA Special Flood Hazard Area, zone AE, on FIRM panel 535G dated August 18, 2014. An August 2025 town notice gives a base flood elevation of 116.4 feet for the North Woodloch drainage project area. We plan the pad and transfer switch heights with the town's flood rules in mind.

Sizing for 1970s single-family homes

Most Woodloch houses were built in the 1970s, and an original panel from that era may have little room to spare. A transfer switch often needs space at the panel, so on the free sizing visit we check whether the existing panel has it or whether the backed-up circuits should move to a separate load center. We count the air conditioning, appliances and circuits you want running, then recommend whole-house coverage or an essential-circuit setup.

What a home generator can and cannot cover

The town runs its own water system from Water Plant 1 on Needham Road. After Harvey, the mayor said there was no money to replace the plant's generator. A standby generator can keep your lights, refrigerator and air conditioning running. Keep drinking water stored for a long outage.

The town permit for a generator

We confirm with the town office which permit a generator install needs. The town's 2025 fee schedule has a base permit line for 'Plumbing, HVAC, Etc.' but no line that names electrical work. The town's permit application says the permit has to be posted where it can be seen and shown to a town inspector who asks for it.

Keeping the unit ready for the next high water

We suggest booking the yearly maintenance visit before hurricane season, so the unit is checked before the West Fork is high.

Questions

Questions we get from Woodloch.

If the town issues a boil-water notice during an outage, can my generator help?

Partly. It cannot make town water safe or keep the town's pumps running, but it can keep an electric range, kettle or microwave on so you can boil water, if those loads were included when the unit was sized.

Where can a generator go on a Woodloch lot in the floodplain?

Usually on the highest practical ground close to the gas supply and the panel, on a raised pad where the ground sits low. We pick the exact spot with you after checking ground height, past high-water marks, the town's flood rules and Generac's clearance rules.

How long does a generator install take in Woodloch?

Permit timing depends on the Town of Woodloch, and when the job needs a permit we book the review by phone with the town office. The install itself is usually done in one day.

Should my Woodloch generator run on natural gas or propane?

It usually comes down to which fuel already reaches your house. If you have a gas meter, we check whether it is large enough for the generator plus your other gas appliances. With either fuel, we connect the supply line to the generator during the install.

My house was raised after a flood. Does the generator have to sit at ground level?

Not necessarily. For a home rebuilt or substantially improved in the town's flood hazard area, the flood ordinance says service equipment must be designed or located so floodwater cannot get in, and that may call for a raised pad. We check your lot's elevation and the permit conditions before choosing the pad height.

Do you service a Generac that went through high water in Woodloch?

Yes. If water reached the enclosure, do not start it. Call (713) 467-1125, tell us how high the water came on the enclosure, and send photos if you can. We check the wiring, controller and engine before it runs again.

Storm-Ready install package

$2,000 off a generator install. While supplies last.

It only comes off the units on our floor, so when they're gone, it's gone. New air-cooled Generac installs come with a free 10-year warranty, and financing is there if you want it. Permit timing depends on your city or county. The install itself is usually one day.
