It can be mind boggling trying to figure out why lights are flickering or outlets are not working, but our technicians are trained to locate and fix the issue. Troubleshooting is a process of elimination in which our electricians start with the most likely cause and work their way from there. Troubleshooting an electrical issue varies in duration depending on the extent of the problem.
For instance, most older homes do not have proper GFCI protection for kitchen and bathroom appliances. Therefore, if an older outlet ceases to work for a new refrigerator, it could be that a GFCI outlet is needed. However, another potential problem with older homes is that the conduit (wiring) is older and will eventually need to be updated for city code and the ability to run newer technology. This can cause all sorts of electrical problems and takes longer for an electrical to pinpoint.
Another potential problem is running too many appliances on one circuit, ultimately blowing the circuit, especially if the home does not have proper GFCI protection. Our technicians encounter issues like this often, especially during the holiday season. Between outdoor decorations and holiday meals, it is common to trip a circuit breaker or blow out a circuit altogether.
Overloaded circuits are the most common reason for outlets and switches not working.
