Generac generatorsHow a Standby Generator Switches On When the Power Goes Out
When the utility power drops, the transfer switch notices the loss of voltage and tells the generator to start. Once the generator is running steadily, the switch disconnects your house from the grid and connects it to the generator, so power is never sent back out to the lines. When the grid returns and stays steady, the switch moves your home back and the generator shuts down.
The generator runs on natural gas or propane, so there is no fuel to carry. To keep it ready, it runs a short self-test on a schedule and needs regular service, which is why we offer maintenance plans.
Ask us anything. These come up most.
Will my lights flicker when the generator takes over?
You may see a brief interruption while the switch moves your home over. It is short, and most things come back on their own.
Do I need to be home for it to work?
No. The whole sequence is automatic, which is the point of a standby unit.
